Premier League, Amex Stadium – Brighton 1 (Gross 57’) Manchester United 0

Manchester United made it three defeats from three visits to the promoted teams this season as they slumped to a 1-0 loss at Brighton in the Premier League.
Pascal Gross’ goal – awarded via the assistance of goalline technology – settled the contest as the hosts secured a famous win to hit the magical 40-point mark.

Jose Mourinho made wholesale changes to the side which overcame Arsenal 2-1 last weekend, but with the FA Cup final only weeks away, none of United’s fringe players impressed in their audition.

In fact, the Portuguese was left livid with the performance of his much-changed side, with only David De Gea deserving any real credit. The Spaniard was their standout player as he produced decent saves to deny Glenn Murray and then Jose Izquierdo.

Every United player was wasteful in possession, but none more so than Paul Pogba who gave the ball away an incredible 13 times before the half-time interval.

Brighton were rewarded for their dominance in the 57th-minute when Gross opened the scoring with a bullet header, which had only marginally crossed the line before Marcos Rojo cleared.
And yet conceding the goal still did not spark United into life. They conjured up a couple of half chances – substitute Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford both going close – but it always looked like it was going to be Brighton’s night.

The win moves Chris Hughton's side up to 11th, while United remain second and still need four points from their final two games to stay there.

TALKING POINT
United's fringe players disappoint: With Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez injured, this was supposed to be a night when fringe players like Rashford and Anthony Martial proved their worth to Jose Mourinho, to give their manager a real selection headache ahead of the FA Cup final against Chelsea on May 19 - but it didn't happen. Rashford's decision-making is up for questioning again - he selfishly tried to go it alone when Martial was unmarked for a tap-in during the first-half - while Martial himself was ineffective and gave the ball away too much. But they were far from the only two who disappointed. Thankfully, for Mourinho, Lukaku and Sanchez should be fit and ready for the Wembley showdown, but the Portuguese must demand more from the rest of his players.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Anthony Knockaert (Brighton): Terrorised the United defence all night. He threatened every time he received the ball, constantly driving forward at pace and creating chances.

KEY MOMENTS
4’ - GOAL RULED OUT! Fellaini has the ball in the back of the net, but it won't count. The Belgian was in an offside position as he raced across the face of goal to turn in Rashford's driven free-kick.

20’ - SAVE! Oooo, decent effort from Murray. He catches it sweetly, rifling an effort from 25 yards at goal. De Gea shifts across his goal, pushing it behind for a corner with a strong one-handed save.

27’ - FINGERTIP SAVE! Izquierdo cuts in from the lift and smashes a shot at goal. It's dipping and moving, and De Gea does well to tip it over the bar.

57' - GOAL! Brighton 1-0 Man Utd: Brighton are ahead - and deservedly so! Izquierdo gets past Darmain too easily on the flank and he fizzes the ball across the face of goal, Gross' bullet header appears to be cleared off the line by Rojo, but after a moment's consideration Craig Pawson awards Brighton the goal.
71’ - SAVE! We haven't seen enough urgency from United tonight, but finally Rashford takes the initiative, firing a shot from 20 yards at goal. It's heading for the bottom corner but Ryan is at full stretch to push it away from danger.

86' - MISS! United conjure up their best move of the game, with Lingard playing a lovely one-two with Martial to open up the Brighton defence. Lingard has a great chance to equalise, but he slices the ball wide. The presence of Duffy did just enough to put him off.
