Julen Lopetegui extends Spain contract

Spanish national coach Julen Lopetegui has signed a new deal that runs until 2020.

The Spanish football federation announced the deal on Tuesday, with Spain set to start their training for the Russian World Cup.

Lopetegui was appointed in 2016, and follows Germany manager Joachim Low and Belgium's Roberto Martinez in extending his contract before the tournament starts in June.

He has previously worked with the Spanish youth teams, before managing Porto between 2014 and 2016.

Harry Kane has been named captain of the England squad for the World Cup in Russia.

England confirmed the news on their Twitter account on Tuesday morning.

The 24-year-old striker scored 41 goals in 48 appearances for Spurs this season, and has 12 goals in 23 appearances for the national side.

Harry has some outstanding personal qualities. "

"He is a meticulous professional & one of the most important things for a captain is that they set the standard every day... I think he is the one who is ready to take that challenge on.”

"Now is a moment in his life where he is prepared to bring that into the team environment."

Kane, who first captained England in a World Cup qualifier against Scotland last year, said it was a "massive honour".

"I'm very excited for the World Cup, can't wait," he said. "Leading the lads out is going to be special."

England face Tunisia, Panama and Belgium at the World Cup in which they will send their third-youngest squad to a major tournament, with an average age of 26.

He will have some experience around him, however, such as Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson and Chelsea's Gary Cahill

"Harry will need the support of the other good leaders we've got around him," Southgate said.

"You don't become a top team by just having a good captain with good values. That has to spread right throughout the group but I think he's the one ready to take that challenge on."

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has warned Liverpool that his side are as hungry as ever to win the Champions League, rejecting claims that the Spanish giants might have lost their edge ahead of Saturday’s final in Kiev.

There have been some suggestions that Real, having won the past two finals, might not be as motivated as Liverpool, with the English club not having tasted European glory since 2005.

“I can’t talk for the opponents, but we always have the same desire as we always do and nobody can say we don’t,” Zidane told a news conference.

“We’re in a third final and we have the chance to do something historic and win it three times in a row. You can’t say Liverpool have more hunger than us; it simply isn’t true.

“Nobody can take our hunger away from us. We're Real Madrid ... We always want more and will always give our all to get more.”

The Frenchman also said that his side’s experience of playing in and winning three finals in the past four years will have no bearing on the outcome. By comparison, no player in the Liverpool squad has reached this stage of the competition before.
“It’s a one-off game, in a neutral venue. We’re ready for it, but our experience doesn’t count," Zidane said.

"Granted, we have more, but we need to show that we want to win it. Our experience doesn’t count for anything. It’s a final, they (Liverpool) haven’t played in a lot of them, but they’ll kill themselves for this and we know it.”

Inevitably, talk turned to star men Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah, but Zidane was unequivocal when asked if he would swap the Portuguese for Liverpool's Egyptian star.

“Cristiano is the best, he shows it every year,” the coach said.

“Sometimes pressure gets to players and it spurs others on. He is certainly the latter. He’s of maximum importance to us.”

Lucien Favre has been appointed as the new Borussia Dortmund manager.

Dortmund parted ways with coach Peter Stoger at the end of the season after the club finished fourth in the Bundesliga and only narrowly made the Champions League spot on the last matchday.

Stoger's departure capped an inconsistent campaign that began with Dutchman Peter Bosz at the helm before he was sacked midway through the season.

The 60-year-old Favre, nicknamed 'the Brain' for his tactical acumen, left French club Nice two days ago and will return to the Bundesliga following successful spells at Hertha Berlin and Borussia Moenchengladbach.

He led Hertha to a fourth place finish in 2009 and then took Gladbach from the brink of relegation to fourth spot in 2012.

"Signing Lucien Favre as coach is an important part of our sporting new start," said Dortmund sports director Michael Zorc in a statement.

"He is well-respected for his qualities which he has impressively proven at Hertha, Gladbach and recently Nice."
Dortmund, champions in 2011 and 2012 and Champions League finalists in 2013, had expected to once again be title contenders this season but instead saw Bayern Munich race away with the title.

"To coach Borussia Dortmund is an attractive task that I am very happy to take on," Favre, who is fluent in German, said. "Now we will start working on the new team."

Former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira is widely reported to be the favourite to take over from Favre at Nice.

Real Madrid clinched a record-extending 10th Euroleague title after overpowering last season's champions Fenerbahce Istanbul 85-80 in Sunday's spectacular final of the continent's premier club basketball competition.

Led by French guard Fabien Causeur and 19-year old Slovenian Luka Doncic, who was named the season's most valuable player after Friday's 92-83 semi-final win over CSKA Moscow, Real forced Fenerbahce into submission thanks to ironclad defending.

Causeur netted 17 points for Real and Doncic, widely expected to be among the top picks at next month's NBA draft in New York, added 15 with a mature performance which silenced 12,000 fervent Turkish fans in the Belgrade Arena.
Italy forward Nicolo Melli stood out for Fenerbahce with a game-high 28 points but his blistering individual display could not save the Turkish side, who committed a flurry of turnovers and missed plenty of open shots.

Rafael Nadal benefitted from a timely rain delay as he recovered to see off Alexander Zverev 6-1 1-6 6-3 and win an eighth Rome Masters title.

The Spaniard was in deep trouble when the heavens opened – a break down at 3-2 in the final set – but he settled quicker after the restart to win four games in succession.

"My first victory here in 2005 was one of the most beautiful victories of my career," Nadal said after reclaiming the trophy he last won in 2013. "To have this trophy again with me after so many years is really very special."
Nadal was in cruise control after ripping through the opening set in 32 minutes, but a combination of errors and a rejuvenated opponent saw Zverev fight back to level and sneak in front in the decider.

While the 31-year-old has staged countless comebacks in his career, few have been gifted to him quite like the Italian capital’s offering as the elements intervened to rob Zverev of his momentum.

After a 50-minute stoppage, Nadal duly broke immediately and was rarely troubled as he clinched another clay-court title, pinching the world number one ranking back off Roger Federer in the process.
He heads to the French Open as overwhelming favourite to win an 11th title at Roland Garros, while Zverev – who saw his 13-match winning run ended – will hope to improve his dismal Grand Slam record, with the German yet to progress beyond the fourth round.

"You're the greatest clay court player of all time and I think everybody saw that today," Zverev said.

Thomas Tuchel wants to give Neymar a platform to perform at Paris St Germain.

Neymar joined the Parisiens last summer in a record-breaking £200million move from Barcelona, but speculation has persisted in recent months that he is already looking for a move back to Spain.

Tuchel, who has replaced Unai Emery as PSG coach this week, used his introductory press conference to outline his plans for the Brazil star.

“I met him last Sunday,” he said in comments reported by L’Equipe. “It was a good meeting. He is an artist, an exceptional player, one of the best players in the world. He does not need special treatment, he must find a structure where he can express himself. I really liked the meeting we had. We will build a structure for him to express himself here.”
Tuchel, who is returning to coaching a year after being sacked by Borussia Dortmund and whose only trophy to date was the DFB-Pokal in 2017, said he was not daunted by the number of star names in PSG’s squad.

“In my opinion, the great players are the easiest to manage,” he said. “They know what to do. They have won a lot of trophies. I am not afraid of star names, of big names, they know what the high level is all about.

“I have won one title, but PSG made me understand they are looking for a leader, a coach with a vision, and I am very happy to have their confidence.”
PSG are committed to making Kylian Mbappe’s loan from Monaco permanent this summer for a huge fee – reportedly £166million – but Tuchel said he had no other plans for the transfer market at this stage.

“If the transfer window closed today I would be happy,” he said. “There are many good players, it’s not like I came here with demands. I need to get to know the players, who they are. If we discover we need to bring in another player, we will do it. Sometimes you have to let young people develop.”

Villarreal are in “advanced negotiations” to bring Santi Cazorla back to his former club for pre-season training – seemingly ruling out any chance that he will stay on at Arsenal this summer.

Cazorla, 33, has not played for Arsenal since suffering an injury in October 2016 but there had been suggestions he was nearing fitness – or that incoming manager Mikel Arteta might appoint his former team-mate as a player-coach.

But the playmaker looks likely to rejoin the Spanish club he represented between 2007-11 in an attempt to prove his fitness and earn a new contract with his Arsenal deal set to expire.
The news was confirmed by Cazorla’s former team-mate at the Yellow Submarine, Marcos Senna.
" I would love to confirm it [a permanent transfer. But at the moment what I've said is that there are advanced negotiations between Santi Cazorla and Villarreal for the player to spend pre-season with the club."
"Cazorla will be a free agent."

Barcelona win on Andres Iniesta farewell

La Liga, Camp Nou – Barcelona 1 (Coutinho 57’) Real Sociedad 0

Andres Iniesta was given a momentous farewell as Barcelona sent him off on the next chapter of his career with a 1-0 win over Real Sociedad.
The Spaniard, making his 674th and final appearance for the Liga champions, had tears in his eyes as he was substituted in the 81st minute, with the Camp Nou crowd serenading the great playmaker with prolonged chants of his name.
Philippe Coutinho’s glorious effort settled the match, which also saw Sociedad legend Xavi Prieto come off the bench to make his final appearance for the club. Lionel Messi started on the bench, but was brought on with 30 minutes left to play, offering one last sight of the Argentine and Iniesta on the same pitch together.

Barcelona will reflect on a double-winning season, finishing the campaign with the Liga and Copa del Rey titles, but this success has been tinged with regret. This season could have brought much more for the Catalans.

TALKING POINT

How badly will Barcelona miss Andres Iniesta? For many, he is the defining figure of Barcelona’s era of unparalleled success, even more so than Lionel Messi. Iniesta is a true legend at Camp Nou, and in Spanish football in general. Any team would be worse off without him, but how badly will Barca miss him? Is Coutinho ready to step up and fill the void left by Iniesta? Will the Catalans have to dip into the transfer market to compensate for his absence?
MAN OF THE MATCH
Philippe Coutinho (Barcelona): The Brazilian endured a staggered start to life at Barcelona, struggling with injuries, but Coutinho has really found his feet for his new club in recent weeks, following up his hat-trick against Levante last week with a stunning goal against Real Sociedad. It was trademark Coutinho, as he whipped a right-footed finish into the back of the net off the inside of the far post. Next season could be when he we see the best of Coutinho as a Barcelona player.
PLAYER RATINGS
Barcelona: Ter Stegen 5, Semedo 6, Pique 6, Mina 5, Alba 5, Rakitic 7, Busquets 6, Iniesta 8, Dembele 7, Coutinho 8, Suarez 7. Subs: Messi 7, Alcacer 5, Denis 6.

Real Sociedad: Moya 6, Elustondo 6, Navas 4, Llorente 5, De la Bella 5, Illarramendi 5, Zurutuza 6, Januzaj 7, Juanmi 5, Oyarzabal 5, Jose 5. Subs: Canales 5, Prieto 3, Odriozola 5.

KEY MOMENTS
20’ - BIG PIQUE CHANCE! The Barcelona centre back probably should have found the back of the net. He was free from a corner kick 10 yards out, but he completely scuffed his shot.

35’ - PENALTY CLAIM! Semedo believes that he should have been awarded a spot kick for a challenge in the box. On first view, it looked like the full back may well have had a case.

57’ - GOAL! Barcelona 1-0 Real Sociedad. What a sensational goal from Coutinho! That was a trademark strike from the Brazilian playmaker! From about 22 yards out, he whipped a right-footed strike in off the inside of the far post. Moya had no chance of stopping that!

81 - FAREWELL. Iniesta is coming off and he gets a standing ovation from everyone inside the Camp Nou. Farewell to a Barcelona legend.
KEY STATS
No player has scored more goals from outside the box than Philippe Coutinho in Europe’s big five leagues this season (eight).
Only Xavi Hernandez (774) made more appearances for Barcelona than Andres Iniesta in all competitions (767).

Lance Stroll's father Lawrence Stroll insists that the family still has faith in the Williams Formula 1 team despite the "rude awakening" of its poor start to 2018.

Williams is last in the constructors' championship and Stroll junior's eighth place in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix is its only points finish so far.

His father insists that he has not reached the stage where he will start to look for an alternative team for his son for 2019.

"We're not there yet," he told Autosport.

"I believe in Williams, I believe in the team.

"Clearly they got it wrong so far. I do believe this is a rude awakening, and hopefully it will bring the best out of the people, and they'll fix it.

"It's sure not as quick as we'd like, and not as quick as they'd like either. But we're not going anywhere else. Obviously the car clearly isn't where we hoped and wanted to be, it's quite a way off.

"It's pretty apparent to the eye what's wrong with the car. I gather everyone is trying their best, there's a great sense of urgency in the team.

"It's not that they don't recognise the problem, everybody does. A blind person could see the problem. I know they're working hard to fix it."

Stroll Sr is understood to have been pushing for Williams to take more technology from Mercedes in the future - Force India has used a Brackley-supplied gearbox for some years - but he played down the extent of his influence.
I'm not a board member, I don't own one share of this team, I'm simply Lance's father," he said.

"Whatever they can do to make the car go better, I'm in favour of, let's put it that way."

He added that he felt his son was performing strongly in adversity, pointing out that the 19-year-old had finished all five races and consistently made up ground on first laps.

"I think his performance, based on the car he has, has been phenomenal," he said.

"He can't qualify the car much better than where he qualifies it, but he does amazingly well on that opening lap.

"He's beaten his team-mate all five times, and beaten a lot of people that the car is not capable of beating.

"So from a performance point of view with Lance, we couldn't be happier. Obviously we'd like a better car to be at the front of the grid. But with the equipment he has, I don't think he could be doing a better job."
